A little more about pirates

I just posted about my experience playing the new Sid Meier's Pirates! over at my own blog. I did touch on some of the things about the design which I enjoyed, and although our game will be much simpler and considerably different, I thought I would cross-post here.

The Idea

A sidescrolling action game with some RPG elements (e.g.
leveling, gaining experience, upgrading equipment/weapons/skills)
revolving around the age-old feud between two of nature's most
violently and viciously opposed natural enemies: pirates and ninjas.

The player will take the role of either a pirate or a ninja in this
timeless battle and fight their way through hordes of the enemy to win
final victory for their side. As they progress through the levels, the
player's character will gain experience, find new weapons and armor,
learn skills such as healing and carpentry(for pirate prosthetics?),
and face challenges in the form of a variety of enemy soldiers and
dastardly enemy boss characters.
